COURSE DESCRIPTION

Unit 102 of the Applied Arabic Studies Course is designed to build a solid structure in Arabic grammar, morphology, and communication. Students will practice the skill sets set forth in unit 101 and take them to the next level with more advanced material and textual analysis from Abu al-Hasan al-Nadwi’s famous Qisas al-Nabiyyin (Stories of the Prophets).

COURSE FOCUS

The areas of focus include:

  • Arabic morphology—how to maximize one’s Arabic skills by learning how to conjugate sound and weak verbs from the ten forms (awzan) and derive nouns from them
  • Speaking—learning how to express both concrete and abstract concepts in Arabic
  • The governing particles which introduce the verb in the Jussive Case (jazm)
  • The governing particles which introduce the verb in Accusative Case (nasb)
  • Relative pronouns
  • Conditional phrases and particles
  • Comparative and superlative nouns
  • Active and passive voice

 COURSE PREREQUISITES

  • A demonstrated knowledge of the skill sets taught in unit 101 (those who have not completed unit 101 will be required to take a placement test)

  • General knowledge of the vocabulary covered in the first half of al-Kitab al-Asasi

INSTRUCTOR

Abdul Aziz Pippin was born and raised in Georgia, where he first began his study of the Arabic language as a teenager. He pursued further studies in Yemen, Mauritania, and Morocco, focusing on Arabic grammar, rhetoric, and literature. Since 1998, he has been teaching Arabic in institutes and private schools, as well as translating on a freelance basis. In 2001, he founded the Salik Institute, a night school program in the Washington, DC area offering multi-layered and holistic Arabic courses for adults. In 2005 he began translating and editing full time for Halabi Publications in the Netherlands, with three titles already published and eight more forthcoming.
